Monolite Fast Scarlet (dull scarlet) 1916 colour trial, perf. 15 x 14 on gummed paper watermarked Simple Cypher, overprinted ''CANCELLED'' type 24, the unique matching upper right corner marginal blocks of twelve (6 x 2), inscribed ''A'' and ''B'' in margins with ''X'' alongside each. Ex de Cadenet, Shaida and Moorcroft. See S.G. Spec. vol.2, page 188. Photo. Early in 1916 experiments were carried out with British Dyes, because dyestuffs hitherto used in the inks had been obtained from Germany, and the supplies of thse were running low. The Imperial Chemical Dyestuffs Group produced pigments, and samples of these were used in an experimental printing. It is interesting to note that the four stamps at right of the second block are in a clearly different shade the rest of the block, Harrisons had reported that the inks produced were not successful and that they would use a variety of mixtures. In October 1917 they reported that the ink was 'getting better'
