The essay denominated 6d. and inscribed “GRENADA”, probably due to the lengthy correspondence regarding dual purpose stamps that had preceded. On this date De La Rue wrote to the Crown Agents “With reference to our various interviews respecting the proposed new key Plates for the production of Colonial Unified stamps, we beg to enclose a design marked A which we hope will meet with your approval ... The name of the Colony & duty appearing as an overprint so that any Colony could enjoy the use of the key plate”. Both designs (see following lot) were approved by the Crown Agents in a brief memorandum on Dec. 24, a decision which lead to the employment of the the Universal Key Plate in 24 different colonial territories right up until 1954.
