A long letter headed ''Varna'' relates the writer's troublesome experiences with the carriage of his possessions, poor food supplies and swings in the weather ''The other day at Scutari we had 106 deg. in our tents, it is now so cold we are all shivering'' (full transcription included). This is the earliest recorded use of this datestamp. The writer, Surgeon-General John Ashton Bostock, posted this letter about a week before Mr. Smith opened the Army Post Office which accounts for both the 11d. rate and the delay of ten days between the letter date and the despatch marking.
