Falkland Islands: Cancellations and Covers: 1945 envelope endorsed ''On Active Service'' and ''AIR MAIL'', with naval tombstone censor in blue, red ''POST/OFFICE/MARITIME/MAIL'' and violet boxed '' DAMAGED BY SEA-WATER'' cachet, stained and with lower flap of reverse missing. It is likely that the incident in which the cover was involved would have been the fire on board the ''Scythia'' which had broken out as she entered the River Mersey on May 23 carrying mail from the Americas and that the cover had been carried by air to North America and thence across the Atlantic. Note on reverse reveals sender as ''J. Bimson HMS Pursuivant c/o GPO London'', this being the base ship for the Naval Officer in Charge at the Falkland Islands. An office at the rear of the church carried the same name. Very rare. Photo. See also lot 729.
