Wyon, engraved on reverse in wreath of Australian plants for presentation to the Hon. Saul Samuel, Postmaster General, for his services. An extremely fine medal (76 x 7.2mm., BDM VI, 591; BM Acq. 1978-82, pl.76, 66) and rare in silver, depicts a female representing Australia holding shield (bearing the arms of the colony) and laurel with implements of industry at her feet. The Garden Palace behind, designed for the exhibition by Colonial Architect, James Barnet, and constructed in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens was sadly destroyed by fire on 22 September 1882. Sir Saul Samuel C.M.G., M.L.C. (1820-1900), an important figure in the the history of New South Wales, was Colonial Treasurer from 1879 to 1870 and later became Agent General for New South Wales from 1880 to 1897. Photo.
