Hand Illustrated and Later Printed Envelopes: 1899–1916, a series of 150 postally used postcards with skilful pen and ink and watercolour illustrations sent by the Rev. C.C. Pritchard to his children, wittily illustrating political figures (e.g. Churchill), the Natal Post ('A Kaffir will run 50 miles a day over stony thorny country carrying a letter in a cleft stick, and a bag made out of wild cat's skin, for a shilling a day', domestic situations, holidays, public events, etc. Some well known personalities are featured including one p.c. showing a portrait of Ammunition Smith of Rorke's Drift ... the man I am going to Lausanne with on Oct. 20 ... He is rather too corpulent to walk but I hope we may be able to make some expeditions by steamer...' (the Rev. George Smith was a military chaplain, who earned his nickname from his work handing out ammunition during Zulu attacks). Also about 20 undated or privately delivered illustrated postcards, poems and photographs. A fascinating assembly. Photo.
