This most unusual Mulready is one of a group of three (the others bearing the adjacent letterings MD and MF), all sent on the same day from Dublin to Kilkenny. Although the 1d. extra is believed to be a Late fee charged for mail received after 6pm, an alternative reason may be that the sender did not realize that 2d. postage was already prepaid by the Mulready envelope. Ex Alcock and Compton, a pencil note on reverse of the cover bearing 1d. MD indicates that these were part of the Calvert collection, sold in May 1921.
