1840 Mulready 2d. envelope a198 addressed to 'T.C. Gratton, Her B. Majesty's Consul, at Boston', it is virtually certain that this was posted at Finmarken, in the very far north of Norway, in the Diplomatic Bag, via London. Manuscript endorsement on side flap at right 'E. E. Crowe, Oct. 10th, 1841, Recd. Feby 19, 1842', indicates that this letter was 19 weeks in transit to the U.S.A. Most unusual. Ex Willcocks and Compton. R.P.S. certificate (2005) states ' the envelope is genuine and seems to have been used to convey a letter but there is no means of identifying whether it passed through the postal system.' Photo. Mail sent by Diplomatic Bag had to prepay the Inland Postage only. E. E. Crowe was the Paris correspondent of the Morning Chronicle, 1832-44. If sent from Paris, transit would not have taken more than three weeks. Sir J. R. Crowe, his brother, was Vice Consul at Hammerfest, 400 miles inside the Arctic Circle. In midwinter it would have had to be transported by dogsleigh when the weather was good enough to travel. It is about one thousand miles down to Hamburg, from where it would have been sent by ship to London.
