1520 | Sale number: 81 Antarctica: British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13: 1910 (Dec. 31) four page autograph letter (signed ''Leicester'') on expedition stationery, written on board the Terra Nova in the ''Ross Sea'' by Dr. Edward L. Atkinson to his sister. Interesting contents . . . ''This is the last letter for a year as we ought to arrive at Cape Crozier in two days from now . . . I am with Evans, Meares and the dogs and as we are the advanced party I am very pleased'', recounting the losses resulting from the recent heavy storm, ''we came in for a very heavy blow and very nearly foundered as the water was in the stokehold and the pumps refused to work. We lost two ponies and two dogs and a lot of deck cargo'' and the ship's arrival in the pack ice, ''We have had more pack than any previous expedition''. Dr. Edward Leicester Atkinson (1881–1929), Royal Naval surgeon and parasitologist with the shore party, was later in command of the expedition's base at Cape Evans and led the party that discovered the bodies of Scott, Bowers and Wilson. Atkinson recovered Scott's diary with other documents, read the burial service and supervised the building of a cairn. Later, as a result of his position of responsibility and as the only medically qualified officer to see the bodies, Atkinson was involved in controversial aspects of the tragedy relating to the use of the expedition's dogs and the possible effect of scurvy upon Scott's party's chances of survival). He is commemorated by the Atkinson Cliffs on the northern coast of Victoria Land. Price Realised £480 |
