R./Post/MAFIA'' handstamp in dull blue, affixed to unused envelope, together with 1d. Downey head letter card similarly handstamped. Both items folded vertically in order to fit into the covering envelope, the letter card with a few minor tone spots. The accompanying letter dated ''8/3/17'' confirms ''I am enclosing a few stamps of different values of Mafia. I regret I have no Field service cords.'' (sic.). An important discovery, these items are believed to be the only known examples of the use of the Mafia handstamp on Great Britain stamps and stationery. Price Realised £2900 |
