Photo.During the early 1860s, manufacturers in the North of England complained that their correspondence to the Continent could not be despatched in time to meet the morning train from London for the Calais ferry at Dover. In 1861 a special evening train was arranged to stop at Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and Leeds, in time to meet the morning train to Dover and the ferry. The extra charge was 2d. per letter. The service was little used, averaging only some 14 letters a day from each city. It was discontinued in 1864. Price Realised £320 |

The Inspector overstamped the red ''PD'' with his own black ''T.O.1'' and applied ''INSUFFICIENTLY PREPAID'' handstamp in black, marked '9b' (baiocchi) postage due in Rome, an interesting cover.
