2288 | Sale number: 45 2d. envelope (stereo obscured) with original letter headed ''Athens April 4 1842'', addressed to Lady Bickerton in Bath, the contents relating the ''heart rending'' situation in Afghanistan and ''dispiriting'' state of affairs in Syria. Carried privately to England and put into the post in London, cancelled by fine black Maltese Cross, clear of Britannia (contrary to regulations) and faint straight line ''Charing Cross''. On reverse has London dispatch of May 9th and Bath receiver also of May 9th. On the front has manuscript signature ''E Lyons'' (the sender, Admiral Edmund Lyons 1790–1858, was stationed in Athens as Minister and Plenipotentiary to the Court of Athens.
