William Mulready (Irish, 1786 - 1863) 'Charlotte Rolfe', (26 x 23cm framed, 46 x 48cm framed and unglazed), pencil on paper, signed lower right. William Mulready (April 1, 1786 - July 7, 1863) was an Irish genre painter best known for his romanticised depictions of rural scenes. He was born in Ennis, County Clare. He was educated in London after the family moved there, and learned to paint with sufficient skill that he was accepted in to the Royal Academy School at the age of fourteen. His first breakthrough was 'Returning from the Ale House' currently held by the Tate Gallery. In 1815 he was was the recipient of both election as a member of the Royal Academy and the 'Légion d'honneur'. His work is well represented in the South Kensington Museum and in the Tate Gallery. In 1840, Mulready's name became inextricably linked with philately with his design for pre-paid postal stationery, known thereafter as the Mulready. He died at the age of 77 in Bayswater, London and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery where a monument to his memory was erected. Provenance: Bearnes Auction House, 2005
