Also two reproduction postcards. Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928), leader of the first expedition to reach the South Pole on Dec. 14 1911 was the first person, without dispute, to reach both poles. This unique and important historic item is the only known example of the expedition envelope to have travelled to Antarctica and been sent on the return of the ''Fram''. Photo. 1164 | Sale number: 119 Antarctica: Norwegian Expedition 1910-12: Rare incoming 10ö. postal stationery card addressed to ''Andreas Beck/Polarskibet Fram'' c/o/ the Norwegian Consul in Buenos Aires, sent from Kristiania Sept. 2 1911, the message reporting the birth of twins. Master ice pilot Andreas Beck (1858-1914) was held in the highest regard by Amundsen who travelled specially to Trømso to enlist him for the expedition. His skill in guiding the ''Fram'' through the ice allowed the Polar party to be landed earlier than anticipated at the Bay of Whales in Jan. 1911 and the ship departed for an oceanographic survey before returning to pick up Amundsen's party a year later. In 1913 Beck returned to the South to inspect the ''Fram'' but fell ill on board and was buried at sea off Montevideo. Photo. Price Realised £1750 |
