Point single arc c.d.s. on reverse, rated ''16'' (décimes) in ms. with red Marseille receiving mark and Jan. 4 arrival backstamp. Before 1862 it was optional for mail to France to be prepaid and accountancy marks were not required as no credit was payable to the British P.O. Originally carrying the components and armaments for the construction of three gunboats, together with their crews, the ""Weser"" was then fitted as a hospital ship, intended for the conveyance of the sick and wounded from China to Suez en route to France. On Jan. 16 1861, however, the ''Weser' ran aground on an uncharted rock in the mouth of the Mekong river and was wrecked. Photo.

Aden: Steamer Point: The ""A/124"" Duplexes: Steamer Point duplex, without year slugs, two good to fine strikes cancelling 2a. orange strip of four on reverse of 1874 (Feb. 16) entire addressed by Thomas Lewin to a Miss Wiggins whom he had met on board ship, c/o the United States Consul in Yokohama ''Via Hong Kong &/China'', the strip additionally tied by Yokohama Mar. 27 arrival c.d.s. in blue, the entire also showing Hong Kong Mar. 17 transit c.d.s. and straight line ''ADVERTISED'' handstamp, the item having been advertised for collection from the consulate. Carried on three vessels; the ''Precursor'' to Galle, the ''Zambesi'' to Hong Kong and the ''Madras'' to Yokohama. A unique item to a destination rarely seen from Aden. Thomas Herbert Lewin (1839-1916), elder brother of actor William Terriss, had travelled to India in Sept. 1857 as a lieutenant and was involved in several campaigns to put down the Indian Mutiny. He became Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent (effectively Governor) for the unregulated Lushai and Chittagong Hill tracts but in Jan. 1874 was forced by ill health to return to England where he was made an honorary Lieutenant Colonel and received a Colonel's pension. He recovered sufficiently to return to India the next year and went on to serve as Deputy Commissioner for both Cooch Behar and Darjeeling. Photo.
