Carried on three vessels; the ''Precursor'' to Galle, the ''Zambesi'' to Hong Kong and the ''Madras'' to Yokohama. A unique item to a destination rarely seen from Aden. Thomas Herbert Lewin (1839-1916), elder brother of actor William Terriss, had travelled to India in Sept. 1857 as a lieutenant and was involved in several campaigns to put down the Indian Mutiny. He became Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent (effectively Governor) for the unregulated Lushai and Chittagong Hill tracts but in Jan. 1874 was forced by ill health to return to England where he was made an honorary Lieutenant Colonel and received a Colonel's pension.
