1642 | Sale number: 31 Falkland Islands: Early Mails: 1772 (Mar. 13) ''The Daily Advertiser'', London, a scarce complete early newspaper reporting a letter from Fort Egmont ''We have settled very amicably with the Spaniards, and I really believe they have acted with very good Faith in the Return of the Stores. I wonder much how they could be jealous of our settling in this miserable Country, where I assure you, it is hardly possible to bring up any Produce to the smallest Perfection; more especially as they have the fine Country of Buenos Ayres so near. At any Rate, we can never defend a Settlement in this Part; so that it will be always a Prey to the Spaniards if they chuse it.'' Also an early German print recording the custom of the Dutch to visit the ''Pinguinische Inselen'' to reprovision with an illustration of the sailors capturing and clubbing the birds, and a portrait print of Henry Cary, the 1st Lord Falkland (1807 etching from the Vansomer original), both framed and glazed. 1647 | Sale number: 31 Falkland Islands: July 2 1878 Sailing: 1878 July 2 front of lettersheet to Bristol bearing Great Britain 1873-80 6d. grey, pl. 15 PA, cancelled by F.1 datestamp with ''SOUTHAMPTON/AU 7/78/SHIP LETTER'' c.d.s. alongside, minor imperfections. Carried on the ''Black Hawk'' on the July 2 sailing. Although the first Falkland Islands stamps were available from June 19, their use has not been recorded on this sailing and the last recorded use of the Red Franks is on that of May 15 (see lot 1645). As the islands did not join the U.P.U. until 1879 it would appear that the pre-franked lettersheet was accepted on the day of sailing as valid for use within a British possession by the island postmaster and the item subsequently passed through the mails without attracting postage due markings. R.P.S. certificate (1997). Ex Shepherd. Photo. The importance of Charles William Alcock (1842-1907) in the development of both football and cricket is difficult to overstate. Among his many achievements, as Secretary of the Football Association, a position which he held for 25 years, Alcock worked on the formation of the code of rules and was the creator of the F.A. Cup. Rather appropriately he was also the captain of the Wanderers side that then won the inaugural competition in 1872. In the same year, at his suggestion, a match was held for the first time between England and Scotland and international football was born. Alcock would have been the England captain but was prevented by injury and so represented his country as umpire instead. He would later referee the 1875 and 1879 Cup Finals and was to get his opportunity as captain of England against the Scots in 1875, scoring in the game. Alcock was also influential in arranging the first international rugby match in England. His influence in the field of Cricket was just as great. Alcock captained Middlesex in the first county match in 1867 and also played for Essex. In 1880 he arranged the first Test Match in England against Australia. Between 1872 and 1907 he served as the first paid secretary of Surrey and his close connection with the Oval (it was the venue for many of the sporting ''firsts'' detailed above) is to be commemorated in the name of its new library. Alcock was an enthusiastic journalist, compiling the first ''football annual'' in 1868 and editing the ''Cricket newspaper for many years. A bound volume of thirteen issues of ''Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds'', edited by Alcock, is included with this lot (slightly damp affected), containing a wealth of large photographs of early cricketers including Alcock himself. His vision transformed Victorian pastimes and put them on the path toward the vast industries which they are today. His recent biography was surely right to dub C.W. Alcock the''Father of Modern Sport''. Price Realised £7500 |
