James Chalmers: 1839 Treasury Competition 1d. type-set circular essay inscribed ''GENERAL POSTAGE/ONE PENNY'' within the outer frames, and ''Not ex. half an oz./1d'' in the centre, printed in black on greyish laid paper watermarked ''1'' (of ''18''), cut octagonally and uncancelled. A great rarity and exhibition item. R.P.S. certificate (2008). Photo. We know of an uncancelled 1d. essay type J in red and an uncancelled pair of 2d. type L also in red, which were discovered in 1966. The example offered here is the only uncancelled 1d. essay in black that we have seen. Colonel Bates in his article in the August 1917 edition of the London Philatelist (vol. 26, pages 183-185) refers to a an uncancelled 1d. type H1 which we believe may be the same item.
