Charles Whiting: A quite remarkable volume entitled ''THE ROYAL CAMEO SCRAP BOOK OF EMBOSSED HEADS'', containing magnificent examples of Charles Whiting's work using the Congreve process. Published by Kendall and Son, 477 West Strand, London, and containing ten embossed plates, as follows; an address and title plate, an inscription plate and Cameo portraits of King William IV, Queen Adelaide, The Duke of Wellington, Earl Grey, Lords Brougham and Byron, Sir Walter Scott, and Thomas Moore. Each of the Cameos is printed in three colours except that of King William which is printed in four, on card with the vignettes and borders strongly embossed. Each, apart from the Cameo of Queen Adelaide, has a facsimile signature beneath the Cameo, most also show ''WHITING PATENT'' inscription within the borders. The title plate includes the following ..''KENDALL & SON have the honour to inform the Public that the heads contained in this Work are produced under a Patent. The engravings are struck in Steel at a cost of several hundred pounds, and the result may be justly considered to be not only unique, but producing a combination of very singular and beautiful effects. It may perhaps add to the interest of the Work to state that his deceased Majesty, George IV, claimed his share in the invention of the Art.'' Photo.
