123 | Sale number: 54 Guernsey: 1793 (December 8th) fascinating entire letter from a soldier (Peter Macleod) at Vale Castle Guernsey, to his father at Tain, rated '1/1' and carried by private ship from Guernsey to Lymington where the very scarce ''LIMINGTON/SHIP LRE'' handstamp (Robertson S1) was applied, a very fine item. Photo. The soldier was part of reinforcements sent to the Channel Islands in response to the threat of a French invasion 'We sailed from Spithead...we were surprised to find ourselves close to Cherbourg..the National flag was hoisted and some guns fired at us but no damage was done...A detachment from each regiment has been landed..I was surprised to find the 78th regiment in town...The Royalists have of late had great advantages over the Republicans near St. Malo and have taken Rennes...I am of the opinion we were intended to be merely a Channel army incase the Jacobins would put in execution those threats respecting invasion...It is shocking to think how many we shall have lost on that account.'
