1750 | Sale number: 109 U.S.A.: Hawaii: Whaling Mail, 1832 scarce early two-page letter without outer sheet, headed ''Oahu Nov. 13th 1832'' written and signed by Capt. Joseph Fitch of the whaler ''Superior'' to his employers N. & W.W. Billings at New London, Connecticut with filing notation, providing an account of his voyage and requesting money for the hire of natives, slight damp stains. In January 1835 Fitch, a prodigious seaman who had risen to command from the lowly position of a cooper's mate and who had notably carried out the successful amputation of a crewman's leg whilst at sea, was killed on board the ''Superior'' as the result of an explosion of gunpower, aged 35. Billings at New London, Connecticut without postal markings, headed ''Oahu Nov. 22 1835'', written to his employers and signed by Erastus Saunders of the whaler ''Superior'' with filing notation, providing a fascinating account of his voyage and its various 'misfortunes'. Saunders, mate of the ''Superior'' at the time of Capt Joseph Fitch's death faithfully followed Finch's instructions to complete the voyage and later died whilst mate of the ship ''Phoenix'' in the Pacific Ocean in August 1838 aged 30.
