Hartley PHMI, USN'', sent from the British Base at Stonington Island to Commander Theodore Vogely c/o Treasure Island Naval station in San Francisco, bearing Falkland Islands Dependencies Thick Map set of eight tied by four strikes of E1 c.d.s. in violet (showing ''1947'' year date error), this the day on which the USS ''Burton Island'' broke the ice surrounding Finn Ronne's vessel ''Port of Beaumont'' and towed it out into Marguerite Bay. Hartley was a medical assistant to Capt. E.E. Hedblom, afterwhom the Hedblom Glacier is named, was a regular participant in U.S. polar expeditions. Photo.

Ellsworth Station and Capt. Ronne four line cachets added on Ronne's later return for the U.S. 1957-58 Expedition. Having earlier served on two of Admiral Byrd's expeditions, Finn Ronne (1899-1980), son of Amundsen's sailmaker Martin Ronne, established a number of polar records both during his 1947-48 Expedition and later as scientific and military leader of the U.S. Weddell Sea base.
