This letter was of the utmost urgency and was sent bt the State Post Express system and endorsed by each Postmasters along the route where new horses were provided - 'Dover this first Sept/ at 7 at night', 'Canterbury at x at nit', 'Syttingbourne one morng', 'Rochester the 2 day/ at 4 in the morning', 'Dartford at 7 in the/ morning', 'Re at London at 9/ in the morning', 'Second of September/ hounslo(w) at xi in the morning', 'Maidenhead past 2/ in the afternoon', 'Reading almost 5 in/ the afternoon'. An important and great rarity, one of a very few such 'Haste Post Haste' letters in private hands. Ex Michael Jackson. 153 | Sale number: 22 Postal History and Covers: 1843 1d. pink envelope to Kildorrery, Ireland, with three page enclosure headed 'Saturday Sept. 30th 300 Miles from Plymouth', an interesting letter, the writer concerned that after a long voyage they are bound for Plymouth rather than Portsmouth, after leaving the Cape on Aug. 1st they put into Ascension only to find the island in a 'disturbed state', in fact open rebellion with a large force of Marines sent to quell the disturbances, he then mentions favourable winds and that they are now 1600 miles this side of the equator. The writer was probably aboard one of the ships of the South Atlantic Squadron. The envelope was put into the post at Devonport on October 1st and has London (4th) and Dublin (5th) transit d.s.'s.
