Universal tied by Christchurch c.d.s., a little roughly opened. Unusually, it appears that an Expedition label affixed alongside has been removed prior to cancellation, presumably due to an objection at the Christchurch post office. Sir Clements R. Markham, former President of the Royal Geographical Society, was the principal organiser of the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04 and launched Scott's polar career.
