This handstamp was used at the Crooked Island Post Office until sometime before October 1836 when it was transferred to Nassau. London ''JAN 26/1803'' receiving circular datestamp on reverse. This is the first handstamp produced locally by the Nassau Postmaster (only recorded in use between March and June 1835), as the type 1 handstamp was still at the Crooked Island Post Office. Bahamas: 1863 (Sept.) cover to Boston, bearing 1863-77 Watermark Crown CC, perf 121/2, 4d. bright rose pair cancelled ''A 05'' with U.S.A. 3c. (2, one uncancelled and affixed below the 4d. pair), overstamped by ''NEW YORK/BR. PKT'' datestamp, and with blue crayon ''Due 2'' and ''7'' alongside. The cover with a few faults, the pair and uncancelled 3c. lifted and hinged back in place. A rare and unusual double rate franking. R.P.S. certificate (1963). It has been suggested that the use of the 3c. adhesives would seem to have been an attempt to pre-pay the U.S. ship postage, it seems that the U.S. postal official did not notice the obscured stamp which might explain the due markings.
