Benner, French missionary at Mekuatling in the Clocolan District, describing the voyage to Africa, disparaging the English and Dutch and mentioning the station at Bethulie. The letter with crowned oval of Cape Town G.P.O. and framed “POST PAID”, rated “8” amended with red ms. “pd 1/6” and endorsed by Benner “Care of Mr. John Foulger esq: seven star alay/Radcliff Highway London”, the endorsement apparently deleted by Foulger and forwarded to Paris with rating “10”. Backstamped with framed “INDIA LETTER/BRIGHTON” and London transit marks of June 1. Summary of letter in English included. THE EARLIEST LETTER FROM BASUTOLAND, unrecorded by Scott in “The Cancellations and Postal Markings of Basutoland/Lesotho Post Offices & their Historical Background” which cites only twenty Basutoland letters during 1835 and 1862 of which eighteen are incoming. 504 Basutoland: 1863 incoming missionary cover from the Institution Protéstante at Valence sur Rhone, addressed to the “Revd. F. Daumas/Makuatleng/Bassuto Country/Care of J. Syme Esq./Cape Tn/Cape of Good Hope/South Africa” the instruction deleted by the sender and amended to “Care of G. Vergottini Esqre/Winburg/Orange Free State”. Endorsed “Voie d’Angleterre”, franked with Napoléon 80c. imperf. pair at double letter rate, cancelled “4077” lozenges, Apr. 28 despatch c.d.s., red boxed “P.P.” and London Paid Apr. 29 transit, backstamped Paris à Calis and red Cape Town June 6. Francois Daumas, a missionary from the Paris Evangelical Mission Society began his work in Basutoland in 1835, establishing his mission station near the border with Ficksburg in the Orange Free State in 1836. The station was destroyed in 1865 during the conflict between O.F.S. forces and King Moshweshwe, obliging Daumas to withdraw to Pietermaritzburg. A rare and very early incoming item from the Daumas correspondence, believed to be the earliest addressed to the territory itself. 2000 2500
