1587 Postal History and Covers: 1555 Elizabethan Exchequer Warrant for the payment of ‘Richard Mynsterley, one of the Messengers of the Queen’s Majesty’s Chamber’, the riding allowance for delivering letters from the Lord Treasurer of England to 42 different men ‘in divers shires’ in August 1554. The exact location of the addresses of the letters ‘doth appear by Mr. Smythe’s book’ (we have not managed to locate this volume). The warrant is signed by the Lord Treasurer himself ‘Winchester’ and endorsed ‘’Mr Brigham, I pray you pay the said Messenger four pounds for the said journey, Written the 27th of July 1555’, and is further endorsed by the messenger ‘Rd. foure pounds by me Rychard Mynsterley’. An important and rare document which pre-dates the previous earliest example of an Exchequer warrant known to us by at least 16 years (ex Michael Jackson, lot 1669 in our November 2003 auction).
