This most unusual Mulready is one of a group of three (the others bearing the adjacent letterings MD and MF), all sent on the same day from Dublin to Kilkenny. Although the 1d. extra is believed to be a Late fee charged for mail received after 6pm, an alternative reason may be that the sender did not realize that 2d. postage was already prepaid by the Mulready envelope. Ex Alcock and Compton, a pencil note on reverse of the cover bearing 1d. MD indicates that these were part of the Calvert collection, sold in May 1921. 1882 The extraordinary almost complete reconstructions of 1d. black plates 1a to 11 and 2d. blue plates 1 and 2, comprising 1d. black plates 1a, 1b and 2 complete, plate 3 missing only two letterings, plates 4, 5 and 6 complete, plate 7 missing only two letterings, plate 8 complete, plate 9 missing only eight letterings, plate 10 missing only seventeen letterings, and plate 11 missing 91 letterings (a quite remarkable achievement considering only 700 sheets were printed), 2d. blue plate 1 complete and plate 2 missing only three letterings. The vast majority of the stamps have full margins, and the condition is generally much above average for such a holding. It is obviously not possible to guarantee the plating of all the stamps but all the plate 11’s have been checked and are correctly plated. S.G. 1–6, cat. £1,348,500. Photo.

The work of a dedicated collector over many years, we believe that this group represents a unique opportunity to acquire an almost complete set of reconstructed sheets of the World’s first two Postage Stamps. In total over 96% - 3,237 of the 3,360 letterings, are represented and present a marvellous challenge for the next owner to complete. All are arranged on specially prepared sheets with spaces for all the letterings.

Should this lot fail to sell intact it will be offered by individual plates in the following 14 lots
