A most important letter saying he had lost his fight with Prideaux and the Commons for Control of the Letter Office, and giving latest news of Mr Witherings who set up the Foreign Office in 1642, and the Inland Office 163540. In 1642 Philipo Burlmachi was required to relinquish the position of Postmaster General to the Earl of Warwick, although he continued to run a post for the Royalists a little longer. Parliament appointed Edmund Prideaux as Master of the Posts, Couriers and Messengers in 1644, but there is no evidence of a public post until 1653, after the execution of Charles I and the exile to France of his son, by which date Prideaux was Solicitor General. |
