1185 New Zealand: 1931 “Smiling Boy” Health 1d.+1d. imperf. plate proof in black on cream wove paper, a marginal block of four from the top of the sheet [1/3-2/4], one or two trivial creases otherwise fine and scarce, being previously unrecorded outside official records and collections. This proof was printed from the original plate made by the Royal Mint in the U.K. before the discovery that the plate was spaced too closely vertically and that the trial sheets could not be perforated satisfactorily. In order to correct this three horizontal cuts were made in the plate between the 3rd/4th, 6th/7th and 9th/10th horizontal rows and strips of metal spacers were inserted into the cuts. S.G. 546 P.
