This is the most notable variety of the line-engraved issues. The error was discovered about nine months after the plate had been registered. The missing “A” was inserted and the plate re-registered as plate 77b. It was more than fifty years before the error was noticed by philatelists and it was first shown at an exhibition of British stamps held in London in 1905.
