1010 New Zealand: 1946 (Aug. 15) railway crash cover to Napier with straight line unframed “DAMAGED THROUGH IMMERSION/ IN MANAWATU RIVER/ RAILWAY ACCIDENT” in violet with additional large part strike on reverse. On Aug. 20 an earthslip crashed onto the Palmerston North to Napier freight train just outside the Manawatu Gorge. The locomotive and first three wagons, including a mail van, fell into the flooded river, killing the driver and fireman. Mail was salvaged some days later and taken to Wellington for drying and onward transmission, only around a dozen covers having been subsequently recorded. Photo. 180 200 160
